Description

This chocolate braided bread is soft, slightly sweet, and full of deep cocoa flavor with pockets of melted chocolate chips. It’s a comforting loaf perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet snack.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In another bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Add the melted butter and egg to the yeast mixture, then combine with the flour mixture to form a dough.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour until doubled.
  4. Punch down the dough, divide into three equal pieces, and roll each into a long rope. Braid the ropes together and place on a baking sheet.
  5. Brush with melted butter, sprinkle chocolate chips, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until cooked through and sounds hollow when tapped.
  7. Allow to cool before slicing; brush with more melted butter if desired.

Notes

Serve slightly warm with butter or cream cheese. This bread makes for a delightful dessert with vanilla ice cream.
