Description
A festive dessert combining layers of sponge cake, creamy custard, light whipped cream, and bright mixed berries.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups sponge cake, cubed
- 2 cups custard
- 2 cups whipped cream
- 1 cup mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
- 1 cup brandy or sherry (optional)
- Chocolate shavings or nuts for garnish
Instructions
- In a glass serving dish, layer half of the sponge cake cubes at the bottom. Brush with milk if the cake is dry.
- Drizzle brandy or sherry over the cake, ensuring it soaks up the liquid without becoming soggy.
- Add a layer of custard over the cake, smoothing it to cover completely. Top with mixed berries.
- Repeat layers with remaining cake, custard, and berries, building just below the rim for the final cream layer.
- Finish with a generous layer of whipped cream on top, creating soft peaks for presentation.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to let the flavors meld and trifle set.
- Garnish with chocolate shavings or nuts and whole berries before serving.
Notes
For a non-alcoholic version, replace brandy with fruit juice. Trifles can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
