Description

A festive dessert combining layers of sponge cake, creamy custard, light whipped cream, and bright mixed berries.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups sponge cake, cubed
  • 2 cups custard
  • 2 cups whipped cream
  • 1 cup mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
  • 1 cup brandy or sherry (optional)
  • Chocolate shavings or nuts for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a glass serving dish, layer half of the sponge cake cubes at the bottom. Brush with milk if the cake is dry.
  2. Drizzle brandy or sherry over the cake, ensuring it soaks up the liquid without becoming soggy.
  3. Add a layer of custard over the cake, smoothing it to cover completely. Top with mixed berries.
  4. Repeat layers with remaining cake, custard, and berries, building just below the rim for the final cream layer.
  5. Finish with a generous layer of whipped cream on top, creating soft peaks for presentation.
  6. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to let the flavors meld and trifle set.
  7. Garnish with chocolate shavings or nuts and whole berries before serving.

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, replace brandy with fruit juice. Trifles can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
