- 2 large potatoes
- 4 pieces of white fish fillets (cod or haddock)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup cold beer (or sparkling water)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Oil for frying
- Lemon wedges for serving
Instructions
- Cut the potatoes into thick fries and soak them in cold water for 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the potatoes for about 5 minutes until lightly golden; drain on paper towels.
- Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl; gradually whisk in cold beer until smooth.
- Dip fish fillets in the batter and fry in hot oil for 4–5 minutes until golden brown; drain on paper towels.
- Fry the potatoes again for 3-4 minutes until crispy; drain on paper towels.
- Serve fish and chips hot with lemon wedges on the side.
Notes
Serve with malt vinegar or tartar sauce. Pair with a light salad or mushy peas for a classic touch.
