Description

A beloved British dish featuring crispy battered fish served alongside hot, fluffy fries, perfect for family gatherings.


Ingredients

  • 2 large potatoes
  • 4 pieces of white fish fillets (cod or haddock)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cold beer (or sparkling water)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut the potatoes into thick fries and soak them in cold water for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Fry the potatoes for about 5 minutes until lightly golden; drain on paper towels.
  4. Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl; gradually whisk in cold beer until smooth.
  5. Dip fish fillets in the batter and fry in hot oil for 4–5 minutes until golden brown; drain on paper towels.
  6. Fry the potatoes again for 3-4 minutes until crispy; drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve fish and chips hot with lemon wedges on the side.

Notes

Serve with malt vinegar or tartar sauce. Pair with a light salad or mushy peas for a classic touch.
