Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup shelled pistachios, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a mixing bowl.
  2. Whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, egg, vanilla, and almond extract in a separate bowl.
  3. Gradually combine the wet and dry ingredients, stirring until a dough begins to form.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour.
  6. Roll out the dough into a rectangle, spread cranberries and pistachios over the top, and roll tightly into a log.
  7. Twist the two halves of the dough together to create a braid and shape into a wreath on a baking sheet.
  8. Let the wreath rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  10. Brush the wreath with an egg wash and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.
  12. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Try using different nuts or dried fruits for variations. For a sweeter babka, increase the sugar in the filling.
