- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
- 1/2 cup milk, warmed
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup dried cranberries
- 1/2 cup shelled pistachios, chopped
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a mixing bowl.
- Whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, egg, vanilla, and almond extract in a separate bowl.
- Gradually combine the wet and dry ingredients, stirring until a dough begins to form.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 5-7 minutes.
- Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour.
- Roll out the dough into a rectangle, spread cranberries and pistachios over the top, and roll tightly into a log.
- Twist the two halves of the dough together to create a braid and shape into a wreath on a baking sheet.
- Let the wreath rise for an additional 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush the wreath with an egg wash and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
Try using different nuts or dried fruits for variations. For a sweeter babka, increase the sugar in the filling.
