  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup waffle mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup water
  • Maple syrup (for serving)
  • Butter (for serving)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Pat the chicken breasts dry and slice each in half horizontally or pound to an even thickness of about 1/2 inch. Pour the buttermilk into a shallow bowl.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, combine the waffle mix, egg, and water until smooth. Set both bowls near the stove.
  3. Dip each chicken breast in the buttermilk, dredge in the flour mixture, ensuring the coating sticks. Fry in hot oil for 6–8 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through (165°F/74°C). Cook waffles in a preheated waffle iron until crispy (3–5 minutes).
  4. Assemble by placing a waffle on each plate, topping with fried chicken, a pat of butter, and a drizzle of maple syrup. Serve immediately.

Notes

For extra crispiness, use panko breadcrumbs or add a bit of melted butter to the waffle batter.
