Description

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy lifting.
  2. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg in a large bowl until evenly combined.
  3. Combine the buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and fold gently until just combined, stopping as soon as no streaks of flour remain.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  7. Allow the bars to cool in the pan for at least 15–20 minutes, then lift out using the parchment overhang and cool completely before slicing into 9 squares.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider adding a glaze or dipping the bars in chocolate. Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
