Description
Cozy, tender donut bars that capture the nostalgic flavor of classic cake donuts, baked to perfection with a sweet top and a hint of nutmeg.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional: powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy lifting.
- Whisk the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg in a large bowl until evenly combined.
- Combine the buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and fold gently until just combined, stopping as soon as no streaks of flour remain.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Allow the bars to cool in the pan for at least 15–20 minutes, then lift out using the parchment overhang and cool completely before slicing into 9 squares.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
Notes
For a richer flavor, consider adding a glaze or dipping the bars in chocolate. Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
