Description

A classic British dessert featuring creamy custard, fruity raspberry jam, and fluffy meringue, perfect for gatherings or cozy evenings at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of white bread
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 1/2 cup raspberry jam
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Tear the bread into pieces and place them in a bowl. Pour the milk over the bread and let it soak for 10 minutes.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Combine the soaked bread with the melted butter, sugar, and salt until well mixed.
  3. Separate the eggs and beat the egg yolks. Stir them into the bread mixture along with the lemon juice and zest. Pour this mixture into a greased baking dish. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until set.
  4. Once baked, spread the raspberry jam over the top. In a clean bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Spread the meringue over the jam layer and return to the oven. Bake for another 10-15 minutes until the meringue is golden. Serve warm.

Notes

Serve with powdered sugar, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream. Best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
