Description

A classic British dessert featuring a creamy custard base topped with fruity jam and fluffy meringue.


Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 cup fruit jam (raspberry or strawberry)
  • A pinch of salt
  • 3 egg whites

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  2. Melt the butter in a saucepan and stir in the sugar, eggs, milk, and vanilla extract. Cook over low heat until thickened.
  3. Fold in the bread crumbs and salt, then pour into the baking dish. Bake for 30-35 minutes until set and golden.
  4. Spread jam on top, beat egg whites to stiff peaks, then spread over the jam. Return to oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes until meringue is golden.

Notes

Serve warm or chilled with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
