Description

A delightful brunch treat with custard-soaked bread and crunchy pecans, perfect for family gatherings or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of French bread
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • Butter for greasing

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking and give a lovely rich flavor to the toast.
  2. Cut the French bread into thick slices and arrange them in the greased baking dish. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until smooth.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, making sure each piece is well soaked. This step is crucial for that custardy texture.
  4. Sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly on top of the soaked bread. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for optimal flavor and texture.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the egg mixture is fully set.
  6. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving to allow the flavors to settle and make it easier to slice.

Notes

Use day-old bread for better texture and adjust sweetness as desired. Can be made ahead and refrigerated overnight.
