Description
Delightful blend of flaky, buttery pastry and savory ham and cheese, perfect for breakfast or snacks.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups sourdough starter
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 pound thinly sliced ham
- 1 cup shredded cheese (e.g., gruyere or cheddar)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, all-purpose flour, softened butter, milk, salt, and sugar. Mix the ingredients until they come together and form a soft dough.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it’s smooth, about 5-10 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 2 hours.
- After the dough has risen, roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Cut the dough into triangles, approximately 4 to 6 inches wide at the base.
- Place a slice of ham and a sprinkle of cheese on each triangle.
- Starting from the wide end, roll up each triangle towards the point to form a croissant shape.
- Arrange the rolled croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover them lightly with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush each croissant with beaten egg and bake for 20-25 minutes.
